APPROACH
Integrated Care
Mental health, athletic performance, and life outside sport can affect one another. I help clients address these interconnected areas to pursue meaningful goals and sustain performance and well-being.
I see each individual client as a whole person—not simply an athlete or coach—shaped by biology, development, life experiences, family, relationships, community, culture, current circumstances, and the unique demands of their sport. Care and skills-training plans account for these and other relevant factors.
With consent, I coordinate care with psychiatrists, physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, dietitians, strength and conditioning professionals, coaches, and other support staff.
Teams
I view teams as systems in which athletes, coaches, sport staff, and the broader environment influence one another. Team organization, culture, dynamics, relationships, shared goals, and behavior can affect both individual and collective performance and well-being.
Consultation and skills training are tailored to the needs and goals of the group.
Structured and Measurable
Individual sessions are present-focused and follow a structured agenda that may include mindfulness, current concerns, progress toward goals, self-monitoring, problem-solving, skills training and practice, and planning for upcoming stressors. Between-session assignments and skills coaching may also be provided when appropriate.
My clinical and research background informs an empirical approach to practice. Clients complete standardized assessments at baseline and periodically thereafter. Progress is evaluated through clinical interviews, validated psychological measures, self-monitoring, goal attainment, and relevant sport-performance data.
My Style
The culture of high-performance sport can make seeking support difficult. I create a nonjudgmental space where clients can speak openly.
My approach is active, collaborative, and grounded in science. I combine professionalism with a warm, laid-back manner. I respect differences in race, ethnicity, nationality, culture, identity, sexual orientation, religion, and lived experience. I adapt my work to each person or group and their particular circumstances.
With individual clients, I work with humility and curiosity, and value their expertise in sport and life. I combine empathy and validation with genuineness and directness, balancing acceptance and change. I make room for humor while honoring serious moments. Together, we identify barriers, set priorities, and develop practical skills for real situations.
With teams and sports medicine staff, I emphasize shared goals, communication, coordination, and practical application.
